We left Friday from the Perkins in Southdale around 10:30 am and drove southeast and crossed the border at Sprague. Our late lunch stop was Sportsman’s Lodge in Baudette. A nice place overlooking the Rainy River. Once lunch was done lunch it was on to Bemidji. After checking in we had a reception put on by our Bemidji host, Rich Siegert. (Damn, those shrimp wrapped in bacon were good!) Rich went through the next days planned route and rest stops and provided us all with maps.
We just completed our second Bemidji ‘Escape’ and the simple summary is that we all had one wonderful weekend!

This year we had 18 cars signed up and some 34 participants! A pretty good increase from last year’s 10 cars. It is quite a sight, seeing 18 Porsches come down the road![/vc_column_text]
Rich once again did an outstanding job in planning the roads we were to drive. What a day! Weather wise it was perfect – sunny and crystal clear with a high of 22 degrees. The roads were beautiful, passing through state parks, wooded country side with enough variations in the roads to keep us all interested! The one common refrain – “Wow, 113 was sure nice!” – meaning it had some fast sweepers along with a quick succession of turns! Attached is a copy of map outlining the route we took!
We had a couple of scenic stops (as designated by the red balloons on the map) and lunch in the town of Walker.
As an aside – I, and a few others decided to go to Piggy’s BBQ. Without any exaggeration, probably one of the best smoked brisket I have ever had. Those who had the ribs and pulled pork also raved about their lunches. So if ever in Walker you must stop at Piggy’s BBQ! Also, the owner noticed the Porsche apparel and came over and told us he had a Porsche dealership in Mid-Ohio back in the day and we had a great chat with him. Small world!
We were back at the hotel by 4:00 pm – which afforded some of us time for a power nap – and then a buffet style supper later on that evening, organized for us by Rich. We all had a great time and were able to recount the day’s driving, swap stories, and share many laughs. This weekend certainly afforded us the opportunity to enjoy our common passion – our Porsches – but equally, if not more importantly, to renew old friendships and make new ones! We were really pleased to have some new members attend, and others who have been members for a while but have not had an opportunity to join one of our events for some time. Events like Bemidji provide a great venue to meet the ‘Porsche Family’ and find out a bit more as to what the Red River Region –PCA and some of the members are all about! I hope this weekend did that.
Again, my thanks to Rich for his gracious hospitality, and for organizing the day’s backroads driving! It was a great time!
Ahh now to plan for next year!
